Facebook Fan Page – “What is a fan?”

by Joe Noonan on November 9, 2009

I just made a Facebook  Fan page… my own! I guess that means I am my own fan…

(still not sure about that one…)

I resisted doing it for awhile, felt weird inviting my friends to ‘be my fan’. I’ve received some fan invites from friends on Facebook and it felt a bit narcissistic (did I spell it right? Does that mean I’m not?), and finally surrendered to the advice and encouragement of several friends.

And I learned something interesting… as I watched the first ten friends join, felt something moving inside.. then there were twenty! Wow! Something definitely moving within me!

So I ‘went in’ and looked… and saw that my resistance was because I had believed that a fan was somehow ‘less than’ their object of appreciation.

Well, having a few fans got me over that! ;)

I realized that those who are signing up are… my friends! And I am in some way a fan of theirs… and now being a fan is cool, its way cool. I like it!

Through a simple re-definition, something that I was in judgment of (and not really even aware that I was judging it) is now a beautiful new way to describe how I feel about those I appreciate!

You, my fellow readers, I appreciate! I guess that means I AM YOUR FAN!

:)
