OK, her mouth wasn’t hell, just the words that came out of it…
I got my teeth worked on last Saturday by my friends Allison and Sandra. Allison owns the dental practice I led the retreat for last week. We met last year when she brought her family on one of my dolphin trips.
On this trip, Allison replaced the old mercury fillings from 6 teeth, and put temporary overlays on four of them. These fillings were old and big. As usual, I passed on the novicane and used my breath instead. There were a few intense moments (b-r-e-a-t-h…), but this too shall pass, and my happy white mouth is proof that the breath gets us through everything…
There was, however, one difficult part…
While they were removing my old amalgam fillings, I had an IV drip with Vitamin C to assist the body in removing any active mercury that the drilling releases.
The nurse who runs it is a love; she’s an IV expert, even teaches other nurses how to do them. Her skill is one thing, her language another…
Thursday and Friday I was offsite with Allison and her team working on a mission statement and teaching them the art of Limbic Coaching. One of the precepts of this work is being conscious and deliberate with our choice of words. Rather than bring into other’s awareness the thoughts and images we desire to leave behind, (Don’t think about chocolate… oops!), we choose words that call our attention into that which is desired/beautiful/etc. The words we utter have a powerful effect on others, whether we know it or not…
This was a foriegn concept to my IV angel. Her actions were gentle, yet her words were pure hell!
She tried to get a vein in the crook of my elbow. She couldn’t find a vein, said I was dehydrated. (Mental note – the morning before I’m going to get stuck with a needle, drink LOTS of water, even if its the stinky water from the hotel sink!)
“I’m going to have to stick you on your wrist. This is going to hurt!” (emphasis hers)
“Yup, its going to have to be up here… too bad, because this is going to hurt!“
“Hmmm, your veins are just not cooperating… I’m going to have to stick you again… I’m sorry, this must really hurt!”
Let me tell you, this woman is psychic! How did she know that it was going to HURT? (it hurt, but I kept breathing…)
Found myself tensing as the needle went in… Three times she stuck me there… the third time she got a vein, but it collapsed.
“Too bad, it collapsed. You must be tense!” (Damn, she’s psychic! ;)
She retied the rubber band, started fishing around for another vein.
“I’m going to have to try this one… its not very big, I’ll have to use a small needle and it’ll hurt.” Too much information! I sure appreciate some reassurance or optimism at this point.
Seriously, I know all is well, and yet my body is reacting to her words. I’m feeling pretty vulnerable at this point.
“OK, I got the vein, but its small… your arm’s probably going to blow up.”
Blow up? What the hell’s she doing? The image of my arm blowing up doesn’t exactly relax me…
“Yup, I’m going to have to keep a sharp eye on your arm, its probably going to blow up.”
My body’s twitching, images of me walking around with a great big purple gorilla arm… not a pretty sight! In my body’s own defense I speak up.
“Ya know, I used to belong to a Spiritualist’s Church, and we practised healing with the laying on of hands. The body’s amazing and has miraculous healing ability. My arm’s going to be fine. ” Whew.
And it was. And my angelic nurse held my hand while the IV delivered my body a drip drip dose of Vitamin C while two more Lightworkers (angels in drag) drilled and filled. I closed my eyes and smiled, knowing I was in loving hands…
What might she have said? Does she have a responsibility to tell me I’m about to embark on a painful procedure? Definitely not! Tell me, how does this sound…
“You’ve got some great veins up here on your wrist… I’m going to use one of them… isn’t the body wonderful in how it gives us so many places to put in an IV?”
“You can relax, you’re in excellent hands. I’m a pro at IV’s”
“How awesome that you’re having a Vitamin C IV… its such wonderful stuff, I’ve heard amazing stories of it’s healing powers…”
Anything, ANYTHING soothing and reassuring… it could be as simple as “I love your shirt” or “You have a great smile” (who doesn’t?).
Noticing what is working, noticing what is beautiful…
And she massaged both my hands – she has a great touch!
I bet you learned a lot from this story, I bet it reminded you what you already know…
You probably know exactly where you can apply this awareness in your own life…
You’ve probably got someone you love that you’re going to have fun using this with!
It’ll make you a happier communicator (and leader)
If you’ve read this far (obviously), that means you’re probably deliberate about speaking more clearly…
And you’re probably a conscientious person, someone who has a passion for bringing more love and light into the world…
I could go on forever (I think I will!)… its fun noticing what’s working, isn’t it?
