Sebastian & Emerson

Sebastian & Emerson

I flew into Detroit to partake of my friend Shawne’s Media training, meeting Jen and her beloved pooch Emerson on the way. We arrived at Shawne and Terry’s home, knocked on the door and stepped back…

Terry & Shawne have a small black Yorkie named Fergie (aka ‘Fergi-licious ;) and she is one feisty pup! Weighing in at 7 lbs, she moves like Muhammad Ali.

Jen’s dog Emerson, a Golden Doodle (half Golden Retriever/half Poodle) weighing in at 55 lbs, is a quaking bundle of joy ever ready to explode into a spasm of exuberance.

The dogs came instantly face to face… Following Shawne’s and Jen’s lead; (they’re the dog owners), we all stepped back and let Nature take its course..

There was a pause, a cautious sniffing of each other, then an explosion of activity, complete with barking and growling. Fergie, cleverly hidden in the tiny body of a lap dog, let the towering Emerson know right away that this was her home and she was the BOSS. (I figured that out pretty quick too).

She LEPT into the air, right into Emerson’s face and gave him a ‘smak’; a combination of bark and snap. When he still insisted on being ‘in your face friendly’, she repeated the move, much to my amazing eyes. (Fergie can fly!)

Emerson heeded her warnings and stepped into line. He kept his distance, even cowered a bit in her presence. But not for long…

By the next evening, the two of them were having the time of their lives racing and chasing each other around the room. We watched and howled! It was pure exuberance in action, and I marveled at the apparent grace with which these two found common ground to play.

Even Sebastian, the big Persian cat, came down to check out Emerson. I was fascinated to watch the inter-species communication at work…

Its our nature to get along; we all want to play. Thanks to the internet, the more our world shrinks, the more we see ourselves in each other, the more our fears wane and our desire to connect grows…
