Today is International Blog Action Day, with the focus on poverty.
There are many forms of poverty; poverty of food, shelter, health care, etc.
And then there’s the poverty of spirit.
30 years ago, (i’m that old?) I had a healing practice using accupressure, reflexology and flower essences to help people heal their physical illnesses.
It became clear that the source of most people’s illnesses was their attitudes and beliefs. There’s dozens of studies that show anger = cancer, bitterness = diabetes, not feeling loved = heart disease. Not feeling loved doesn’t mean they weren’t loved, they just couldn’t feel it.
So I switched careers and became a psychotherapist. Asking questions, providing dialog so people could see the conflicts they held within them. Nip it at the bud, before it shows up in the body.
I’m going to make a blanket assessment here, bear with me.
The source of ALL poverty is poverty of the spirit.
After 3 decades of working with people from many walks of life, I see our fundamental relationship/beliefs about life are the soil from which our fruit bears. Or not.
What to do? Bitch, bemoan, commiserate or take action. Having done them all, now I keep a case of water and a box of granola bars in my car, offering it to those in need.
And when I hand it to them, typically at a red light in traffic, I silently bless the food, look them in the eye, and say something honest, something like “You are beautiful”.
The looks and comments I get back feed my spirit.
The food and water is a temporary solution. The recognizing and honoring of each other is the only true solution.
This is why I do the work I do; championing the beauty of life. That’s why I write this blog.
Feed the spirit by honoring what is beautiful in our lives. The beauty’s everywhere, when we choose to see.
